Water Filters
Shower water filters have become the rage but how important
is it really to have a water filter on your shower? Well that
depends on how you feel about water filled with chlorine and
chemicals seeping into your skin and hair. It is no secret that
our water systems are overfull with chemicals, chlorine,
fluoride, bacteria, pharmaceuticals, etc. Most of us know that
by drinking this water we are greatly affecting our health.
What many are just learning is that using this water in our
showers and baths is also very damaging to our health. Unless
you have a whole house water filtration system, a shower filter
is a must. Let’s explore why this is and which shower water
filters to look for.
Benefits of shower water filters:
- Chlorine will kill your cells and attack the oils that
retain moisture. This in turn damages your skin and your
hair. It will leave you with dry, itchy skin. Removing this
chlorine will help to eliminate inflamed skin and dry,
brittle, green hair.
- A shower water filter will soften the water and
therefore reduce the amount of soap scum and hard water
deposits that are so difficult to clean.
- Rust and other oxidized minerals will be reduced in
your shower.
- The air quality in your home will be improved. This is
because chlorine evaporates quickly and ends up floating
around in air particles.
- Reduction of red, itchy, sore eyes after a shower.
Choosing your shower water filters:
There are four different types of shower filtration media
(the material inside the filter cartridge that does the actual
filtering).
- KDF is the most efficient in warmer
temperatures and is often used in showers. It is a mixture
of copper and zinc. How it works is the water flows through
the KDF and a tiny electrical charge is created which
forces the free chlorine to combine with minerals in the
water and produces a harmless chloride.
- Carbon removes pollutants from the
water by its sticky surface. A very high grade of carbon
must be used in the shower because of the warm water
temperatures.
- Chlorgon is a great combination with a
KDF as it is very efficient in a range of water
temperatures. It converts free chlorine and some combined
chlorines into harmless chlorides.
- Crystals and Magnets do not get rid of
the chlorine but are used to soften the water by reducing
the size of the clusters of water molecules
A combination of these medias will work best and that is
what you should be looking for while shopping for your shower
water filter. There is a variety on the market with a wide
price range. Watch for how often the filters need to be
replaced as this will affect your long term cost.
Overall shower water filters are an extremely important
addition to your home. There are great benefits from having a
shower water filter from improved health to softer skin to
better air quality. By combining different water filter medias
you will get the best results and it will be well worth the
small initial investment.
